Familial Hypercholesterolemia, Statin Therapy, and Dementia Risk

High levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol have been associated with a greater risk of dementia. That led researchers to question what that might mean for patients with familial hypercholesterolemia. A recent study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association Network Open sought to determine if high-density lipoprotein cholesterol caused by a genetic mutation was associated with any increased risk of dementia. NSAIDs Block Beneficial Bone Effects of Bisphosphonates

Older patients who use bisphosphonates to protect their bones against osteoporotic fractures also are highly likely to use nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) for pain. A recent study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research suggests that might be a problem, however, because the painkillers appear to negate the positive effects of clodronate in older women.
