According to a systematic review and meta-analysis published in BMC Infectious Diseases, individuals with hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections are at an increased risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD).

The authors wrote, “Currently, several studies have observed that chronic hepatitis B virus infection is associated with the pathogenesis of kidney disease. However, the extent of the correlation between hepatitis B virus infection and the chronic kidney disease risk remains controversial.”

The primary objective of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of observational studies to evaluate data and determine whether there was a correlation between HBV and the prevalence of developing CKD in the general adult population.

For this systematic review and meta-analysis, researchers searched seven databases for relevant studies up to March 2023 and investigated the quality of studies utilizing the Newcastle-Ottawa Quality Scale. The researchers consolidated the data using a random effects model to evaluate the correlation between HBV infection and the expanded risk of developing CKD.

In this analysis, 31 studies reported a correlation between HBV infection and the risk of developing CKD. The findings revealed a noteworthy positive association between HBV and CKD, with a pooled odds ratio (OR) of 1.20 (95% CI, 1.12-1.29), signifying that HBV infection augments the risk of developing CKD.

Based on their findings, the researchers discovered a noteworthy correlation between HBV infection and an augmented risk of CKD; however, they could not establish a direct cause-and-effect relationship.

The authors wrote, “More comprehensive prospective longitudinal studies are needed in the future to provide further exploration and explanation of the association between hepatitis B virus and the risk of developing chronic kidney disease.”
